Instagram surfaces links as clickable in three places — the bio website field, story link stickers, and DMs to verified or 10k+ follower accounts. If your link is showing as plain text in any of these surfaces, one of the six conditions below is almost always the cause.
Fix steps
Confirm the link is in the website field, not the bio text field. Links typed inside the 150-character bio description render as plain text. Move the URL into Edit Profile → Website. Only that field renders as a tap target.
Include the protocol. Instagram requires
https://(orhttp://) in the URL. A barelink.boo/yournamewill not render as clickable. Usehttps://link.boo/yourname.Check for trailing or leading whitespace. A space before or after the URL in the website field invalidates the link. Re-paste with the field cleared first.
Verify the domain isn't on Instagram's blocked list. If your domain has been flagged, the link saves but renders un-tappable, sometimes with a warning. See Instagram blocked my domain for the unblock workflow.
For story stickers, confirm the link sticker is selected, not a text overlay. Tap the sticker icon → Link → paste URL. A URL typed via the text tool is not tappable.
For DMs, confirm the recipient sees clickable links. Some account types (new accounts, accounts that have restricted you, accounts in specific regions) have link previews suppressed. The link is still functional — they can long-press and copy.
If the link is in the right field, has https://, no whitespace, and is not on a blocked domain, force-quit the Instagram app and reopen. Cached profile data occasionally lags behind a saved edit by 5–15 minutes.
Still not working?
The most common silent failure is the in-app browser logged-out problem — the link IS clickable, but the page it opens treats your viewer as a stranger. Worth ruling out.
